Roy Cumming

Roy Cumming was born July 18th, 1942 in East Orange, NJ. He grew up in Clifton, NJ and attended Clifton schools. He started school violin lessons at 7 years old and switched to double bass at the age of 18. Roy studied classical techniques with Frederick Zimmerman and jazz with Ron Carter. Ry played jazz gigs, traveling with Teddy Wilson, and also played many gigs with the great bebop pianist Al Haig. Roy toured England with Al Haig, including a performance at Oxford University, Roy worked consistently with Al Haig until Haig’s death in 1982. He freelanced with Al Cohen and Zoot Sims and played jazz sessions with Chic Corea. He was part of the jazz trio of Harry Leahey from 11970 with Glenn Davis on drums, until Leahey’s death in 1990. Roy worked for the next 20 years playing with the Howard Williams Jazz Orchestra, at the Garage in the West Village in New York.

Roy continues to work as a studio musician and freelance jazz player. He is a Lifetime Achievement Award Winner conferred by the Pennsylvania Jazz Collective. He still endeavors to play jazz the best he can.
