Growing up in New Jersey, Tom began his studies on the clarinet at a free summer music clinic at age 11. However, his fascination with the saxophone brought him a gift of an old funky alto sax by his teacher (pictured on the back of his CD, playing it in 1966 at his first gig). Despite the awful condition of the sax, he fell in love with the instrument and never put it down. Tom continued playing throughout High School performing in the Jazz, Concert and Marching Bands. He started playing professionally at the age of 12 in 1966 and hasn’t stopped.

As a music major in 1971 at Glassboro State College (Now Rowan University) Tom left 3 years later to work with Shorty Hill. In 1977 he decided to continue his studies at William Paterson University with Thad Jones. He graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies and Performance in 1978.

He continued his professional career as a saxophone player, co-leader and composer for the Jazz/Funk band “Splat” and also performed, recorded and wrote for the 10-piece New York-New Jersey based band “The Dalton Gang”. His first overseas touring experience was with “Machito.” Tom played in New York and on-tour with Machito until his death in 1986.

In addition to the Machito Orchestra, Tom has performed and toured extensively with the Phil Woods Big Band, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puentes, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Louis Belson Big Band, Clark Terry, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, Four Tops, President Bill Clinton, and the Clarence Spady Blues Band.

His CD, A Work in Progress with the Work In Progress Band has gotten tremendous response and has been played on over 100 Smooth Jazz radio stations throughout the US and Canada.

Teaching privately for over 30 years, Tom also conducts workshops in high schools and colleges. He is also a master woodwind repair technician.

“Tom Hamilton may call his spirited and masterfully eclectic contemporary jazz debut A WORK IN PROGRESS, but the veteran world class saxophonist brings to his infectious mix decades of diverse experience.” Jonathan Widran – Jazziz Magazine
