Playing acoustic and electric bass since he was in high school, Tony started as a rock-driven guitar player but switched to bass so that he could participate in the music curriculum at Central High School, Scranton PA. He even spent some time playing Sousaphone in the marching band directed by Prof. Pat Marcinko.

Tony began his professional music career as the house bass player at clubs and resorts in the Pocono and Catskill Mountains accompanying a myriad of well-known entertainers such as: Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Mose Allison, Phil Woods, Hal Galper, Urbie Green and John Coates Jr. His talents have been heard on recordings with Dave Liebman, Bob Dorough, Phil Woods, George Young, Jamey Haddad, Vic Juris, Phil Markowitz, and countless others. He is also a new member of the New York String trio with James Emery and Rob Thomas. He has collaborated with saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, drummer Jim Black and Dave Liebman as “Different But The Same.”

He performs regularly with Broadway star Betty Buckley and jazz pianist Christian Jacob and can also be heard on several “Deer Head Records” releases with Bill Goodwin, Joe Locke, and Clarice Assad. His versatility and wide range of musicality has afforded him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from folk to pop to jazz.

“Marino’s versatility and wide range of musicality has afforded him opportunities to accompany and record with numerous artists from jazz to folk to pop. The bass is a part of his being. When he is playing, Marino and his bass are one and the instrument is his voice.” bassmagazine.com
